Here comes big daddy! Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, Granddaddy Purple, also known as Granddaddy Purps or simply GDP, was first created by Ken Estes of Estes Farms back in ‘03. One of the most popular and sought after indica strains on the west coast, this potent purple strain was produced by crossbreeding two other indica favourites, Purple Urkle and Big Bud. Granddaddy Purple’s fantastic genetics can be attributed to its familial lineage, and have further made it a popular strain for crossbreeding and creating new hybrids, such as the Candyland and The Loops strains. Effects of Granddaddy Purple

Despite being an indica-dominant strain, Granddaddy Purple also offers some sativa qualities as users will experience both a cerebral and physical body high. Granddaddy Purple is an indica-dominant hybrid with a ratio of 70% indica dominance to 30% sativa. On average, it measures from 20% to a whopping high of 27% in THC levels with 1% CBD. Its parent, Big Bud, is also indica dominant with 85%:15% and 23%-26% THC; while GDP’s other parent, Purple Urkle, another Californian native strain, trends at 18%-21% THC on average as a balanced 50%:50% hybrid. Its child, The Loops, is another indica dominant hybrid with an average of 22% THC; its other child, Candyland, is actually a sativa dominant hybrid with an impressive 24% – 29% THC average, 1% CBD and 1% CBN. While Granddaddy Purple has quite a big family tree, it is often compared and confused with Grape Ape, which is yet another grapey, purple indica that is crossed between Mendocino Purps, Skunk, and an Afghani landrace.

Appearance & Aroma

One of the most beautiful strains out there, the appearance of Granddaddy Purple screams luxury. These buds are densely packed and are on the larger side, and bloom in varying shades and intensities of beautiful purple hues, traits that it borrows from Purple Urkle and Big Bud. They are speckled with bright orange hairs, and further coated in a thick and sticky layer of resinous white, crystal-like trichomes. In common with other purple strains, the Granddaddy Purple is naturally fruity and berry-like in aroma and flavour, particularly tasting like super sweet grapes that are nicely complemented by a refreshingly earth pine and hash spices, an indicator of its indica lineage!
